The Inventor of the LED is praised
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Friday 23rd of April 2004 gave the Lemelson-MIT-award to Nick Holonyak because he was the first to develop practical red LEDs (light-emitting diode).
Nowadays LEDs are common in our society and more applications are found for these little light sources.  The LEDs are often used to replace conventional lights.
He also has been a mentor for technical students for a long time.  This contributed to the improvement of science and technology.  This prize was awarded for the 10th time.  The winner gets 500.000 dollars, which makes the Lemelson-MIT-prize the largest for an invention.
